Message From the Chairperson
It gives me great pleasure to present to you Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) 2006 annual fiscal report. I should like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your continued support of PWJ.
In 2006, and in the eleventh year since its establishment, PWJ saw the conclusion or the restructuring of many of its on-going support operations, including, an end to assistance given to those areas devastated by the Sumatra Earthquake and the Indian Ocean Tsunami and a turning point in relief activities offered in Iraq aimed at restoring infrastructure destroyed by the war; as well, PWJ concluded past projects in Pakistan, Sierra Leone and China and substantially restructured its operations in Southern Sudan during the year to include such new efforts as providing assistance for the repatriation of returnees.
Unfortunately, there remain a great number of individuals who continue to suffer from hardships such as conflict, disaster and poverty. And whenever new crises arise, concerns shared by the international community for past crises tend to drift away, often making sustainable improvements in certain situations all the more difficult. Thus, PWJ strives to pinpoint where and what kind of support truly is needed and vows to exert every effort to deliver appropriate support, both effectively and efficiently. PWJ greatly appreciates your continued understanding and your support.Hiroaki Ishii
